How to Apply to the Urban Studies Programs

Deadlines

To be assured of consideration by the USP Student Affairs Committee in time to begin the semester that you wish, you must have filled your application by these dates:

Master's Program

Fall Semester
Graduate School Materials: January 5
Urban Studies Materials: January 5
Spring Semester
Graduate School Materials: October 1
Urban Studies Materials: October 1

Doctoral Program

Fall Semester
Graduate School Materials: January 5
Urban Studies Materials: January 5
Spring Semester

Applying to the Master's or Ph.D. program:

Master's Degree Program in Urban Studies

To apply to the Master's Degree Program, the applicant needs to:

  1. Complete the Graduate School's online application that includes a reason statement for graduate study, transcript requests, and an application fee.
  2. Have two letters of recommendation submitted to Urban Studies Programs by the recommender. Letters should be from current or former professors who can comment on an applicant’s previous academic performance. Use the Letter of Recommendation form which is to be partially completed by the applicant and given to recommender (see instructions below).
  3. Complete and send in the Fellowship and Financial Assistance Information form to Urban Studies Programs.
  4. A writing sample is not required but may be submitted to Urban Studies Programs. Submit written work which demonstrates your ability to do original research and/or to critically analyze and evaluate the work of others.
  5. Return the Master’s Application Checklist to Urban Studies Programs which specifies other requirements that may apply. Master Application Process Checklist.

Applicants complete the top portion of the letter of recommendation form and then give the form to the recommender to complete the ranking information on the bottom half of the form. Both the letter of recommendation and accompanying form must be sent directly to the Urban Studies Programs from the recommender.

Doctoral Degree Program in Urban Studies

To apply to the Doctoral Degree Program, the applicant needs to:

  1. Complete the Graduate School online application that includes a reason statement for graduate study, transcript requests, and an application fee.
  2. Have a minimum of three letters of recommendation submitted to Urban Studies Programs. At least two of the three letters should be from current or former professors who can comment on an applicant’s previous academic performance. Use the Letter of Recommendation form which is to be partially completed by the applicant and given to recommender (see instructions below).
  3. Complete and send in the Fellowship and Financial Assistance Information form to Urban Studies Programs.
  4. Submit your Master’s paper or other written work to Urban Studies Programs, which demonstrates your ability to do original research and/or to critically analyze and evaluate the work of others.
  5. Submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores to the UWM Graduate School. Scores must be within the last 5 years.
  6. Submit your Urban Studies Essay (Addendum) to Ph.D. Application to Urban Studies Programs.
  7. Return the Doctoral Application Checklist to Urban Studies Programs which specifies other requirements that may apply. Doctoral Application Process Checklist.
