Mission
Statement
The
mission of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource
Center at UW-Milwaukee is to connect with various student populations
and the community at large by:
- Embracing
the diversity of the UWM student community
- Increasing
the awareness, education, and presence of LGBT issues on the
UWM campus,
- Providing
a resource for students and community members wanting to learn
about and advocate for LGBT issues,
- Providing
a safe-space for all LGBT students and their allies at UWM
to give and receive social and emotional support, and
- Fostering
student leadership, and personal, academic, and professional
growth through collaborations on and off campus.
The LGBT Resource
Center is a student led and funded initiative to serve UW-Milwaukee
students and the general University community.
Resource
Library
The resource center has books, magazines, videos and other materials that can
be referenced in the center or checked out. The center gladly accepts donations.
Speakers
Bureau
Speakers are available for events and meetings both on and off campus. Contact
us with your topic and we will arrange for speakers from the university community.
Safe Space
The safe space program enlists allies from UWM faculty and staff to identify
themselves and their space as a "Safe Space". "Safe Space" is
identified by a 7" by 5" card that says UWM Safe Space on top,
with a group of people surrounding a pride triangle below the text. Students
and other
university
members can feel free to be themselves and
talk about
lgbt issues
when in a "Safe Space." Please call the center or email uwm-lgbt@uwm.edu
to become a safe space participant.
Mentoring
Programs to connect students to one another on campus, to other schools and
to the community at large.
Support
Groups are sponsored fully or in part by the LGBT Resource Center. Call to
join or if you would like to start your own group. Groups include "Coming
Out Support Group", "LGBT Students of Color" "Transgender Students
and their Allies."
