Text on Back: "Perhaps the finest example of a medieval world map, or mappamundi, preserved in the Western Hemisphere, the Leardo map of the world is the oldest original map in the AGS Library. Dating from 1452, this manuscript map on vellum is one of only three extant world maps by the 15th century Venetian cartographer Giovanni Leardo. Following cartographic conventions of the time, Jerusalem is shown as the center of the world, and the map is "oriented" with east at the top. A series of concentric rings around the circular map comprises an elaborate calendar, a feature common to all of Leardo's maps.
