CHEMISTRY

Academic Program

Undergraduate major and minor, teaching major and minor; M.S., and Ph.D. in Chemistry. The undergraduate program offers a standard chemistry major, a biochemical option, and the Course in Chemistry with an American Chemical Society-approved curriculum. The graduate program offers specialization in analytical, organic, inorganic, or physical chemistry, as well as biochemistry; beginning doctoral students must show proficiency in the first four of these. A doctoral option is an interdisciplinary specialty in biogeochemistry, in cooperation with Biology, Geosciences, and the UWS/UWM Great Lakes Water Institute.

Sub-specialties include organometallic chemistry, chemical and statistical thermodynamics, colloid and interface chemistry, electrochemistry, free radical chemistry, quantum chemistry, surface chemistry, and NMR spectroscopy.

Collection Level

Research.

Collection Profile

The following LC classification range descriptions represent areas of concentration for chemistry:
Q (Science (general)): Communication in science. Scientific literature.
QD (Chemistry): General. History. Technique; Analytical chemistry (Qualitative analysis, Quantitative analysis, Technical analysis, Water analysis); Inorganic chemistry (metals); Organic chemistry (Organic analysis, Organometallic chemistry, Biological chemistry); Physical and theoretical chemistry (Quantum chemistry, Surface chemistry). Selectively collected categories: Inorganic chemistry (Salts, Inorganic polymers); Organic chemistry (Carbohydrates, Aromatic compounds, Polymers); Physical and theoretical chemistry (Thermochemistry; Electrochemistry; Plasma chemistry; Radiochemistry. Nuclear chemistry; Photochemistry).
QH (Natural History (general). Biology (general)): General biochemistry.

Languages

English; some German and other European languages.

Other Considerations

Chemistry participates in the UWS/UWM Great Lakes Water Institute and the Laboratory for Surface Studies, both UW Regents Centers of Excellence.
