Undergraduate major, minor; M.A., Ph.D. History is also a strong component of the Ph.D. program in Urban Studies. Graduate specialization options include: urban historical studies; public history; a coordinated degree program leading to a simultaneous M.A. in History/MLIS, in cooperation with the School of Information Studies. Doctoral concentrations include: Modern Studies, the modern period of world history emphasizing theoretical and interdisciplinary perspectives such as literary theory, feminism and gender critique, cultural studies, Marxism, neoconservatism, modern and postmodern art and traditions of the avant-garde, film, media studies, and theories of post-industrial society; Global History, including regions and localities in a global context and phenomena that transcend single nations or regions, such as the environment, religion, ideology, labor, migration/diaspora, war, peace, industrialization, colonialism and imperialism, social movements and political conflicts, slavery, class, gender, science and technology, popular culture, trade and finance, demography, politics, nationalism, and international relations; Urban History, including origins and changes in all aspects of urban life and urban areas, worldwide and in all periods.
History offers a very broad array of studies, in temporal, geographical, and topical terms, spanning from ancient Greece and Rome to recent Europe, the U.S., and Latin America; ancient to modern China; the history of Japan, Southeast Asia, and Africa; the history of Christianity; topics in the history of religious thought; the Holocaust; European, American, and Islamic intellectual history; legal history; history of science; social history, including the history of North American Indians, immigrant groups, Black history, women and feminism, the family and sex roles, and popular culture; economic history including labor history and poverty; urban history including the history of Milwaukee. Focus on particular countries includes Britain, France, Germany, Poland, Russia and the Soviet Union, Mexico and countries already mentioned above. Special studies on methodology include oral history, quantitative analysis, and the study of maps and material culture. Archives administration is also taught.
