Music Library Training Questions
General Direction Questions
- 1. Where are the DVD's?
- All DVD's are located in the Media Library in the Lower Level, West Wing of the Library.
- 2. Is there a Photocopier and/or Scanner I can use?
- There is a photocopier on this floor by the PCat terminals and display case. A scanner is available down stairs in the Learning Commons.
- 3. Where are the Bathrooms?
- Right before entering the bridge to leave this area you will find the Men's on the right, Women's on the left.
- 4. Where is the Computer Lab?
- The computer lab is part of the commons area on the first floor of the building. All computers on the first floor are part of the "lab."
- 5. Where are the Curriculum materials?
- They are on the north side of the 2nd floor east wing.
- 6. Where are the Periodical?
- Different volumes of journals will be in different locations (physical and electronic). The best place to start is PantherCat. The record for each journal will give a location for volume ranges and will also tell you what we have electronic access to.
Current Music periodicals are located on the south wall, to the left of E281. When periodicals are taken off the "current" shelf they are bound and then shelved on the stacks in call number order.
Music Library Direction Questions
- 7. What is a folio (FOL) and where can it be found?
- Folios items that are too big to fit on the regular shelves. These items have the location code (FOL) in their records. The Music Library folios are located in the north east corner by room E281.
- 8. Where are the music reference books located? Can they be checked out?
- The music reference books are located on the short, long shelves right in front of the music service counter. These items have the location code (RMU) in their records. Reference materials can ONLY be checked out to Faculty/Staff for 24 hours.
- 9. Where are the Master Tapes located? What makes them different from the rest of the tapes?
- These are currently located in the back room. These are original cassette tapes that use to not circulate (dubs of the originals circulated). These can now be checked out, you'll just need to add a barcode.
- 10. Where are collected works shelved?
- Collected works are in the call number range M1 - M3. They are on the floor with all the rest of the scores. M1-M3 are technically reference materials so they can only be checked out by Faculty/Staff for 1 week.

Reserve physical and electronic
- 16. How can I find materials that are on reserve for my class?
- All items on course reserve (physical and electronic) are listed in PanterCat. Search for your course by "Instructor:" on the "Course Reserve" tab of PantherCat for a list.
General Music Library
- 17. When is the Music Library open/close?
- The best way to answer this is to show them where to go to get at them. The Music Library hours are available on the web at http://www4.uwm.edu/libraries/Music/abouthours.cfm.
- 18. Do you have popular music?
- Yes, we do have popular music. We have scores, books, and CD's/LP's of popular music. CD browse Lists
- 19. Will you record/dub/burn this for me?
- We have to own the record/tape/cd they want us to dub and it has to fall within "fair use" which means it usually needs to be for a class. Students have to bring in their own audio CD to record on, Faculty do not.

- 21. Can community members use the music library?
- 22. What's the difference between "hold" and "reserve?"
- When we "hold" an item for someone it is infomally placed to the side with their name attched so they can come pick it up later. Be sure to fill out a "HOLD FORM." The maximum period for a "hold" is one week.
When an item is placed on "reserve" it means that it has offically been set aside for a course. The item is then only allowed to be checked out for 2 hours IN THE LIBRARY. This is an offical, semester long status change.
Circulation
- 23. Can students/faculty/staff from other UW system schools check things out?
- Students/faculty/staff from other UW system schools can check out materials from the Music Library. Take their school ID to bring up their record in Circulation. Some IDs might not scan. You might have to enter them by name.
- 24. What can and cannot be checked out at the Music Library?
- All music items (audio, scores and books about music) must be checked out at the Music Library.
Non-music items must be checked out at the first floor main circulation desk on the west wing of the building.
