Gifts-in-Kind
Donations of Materials to the UWM Libraries
The Libraries welcome gifts of academic books and journals to augment our collections. These donations are retained at the Libraries' discretion; some important items are added even if the Libraries already have a copy. Other items are given to the Friends of the Golda Meir Library for its book sales. The proceeds from the sales supplement the Libraries' acquisition funds. Below are guidelines to consider before donating materials.
We welcome the following types of materials for addition to our collection:
- Scholarly or scientific books in any area of UWM's curriculum or research;
- Continuous runs of journals or periodicals of academic interest--generally five years or more--that do not duplicate existing holdings;
- Issues of periodicals or journals that fill gaps in our holdings of those titles;
- Musical scores;
- Recordings on CD.
- Some children's books and K-12 textbooks.
The following are examples of materials we are happy to accept on behalf of the Friends of the Golda Meir Library for its book sales:
- Academic books that duplicate our current holdings;
- Popular novels;
- Mass-market paperbacks;
- Current textbooks (except K-12);
- Miscellaneous books, e.g. cookbooks, hobby books;
- Videotapes, phonograph records, and CDs that duplicate our holdings.
The following are examples of material generally not accepted by the Libraries:
- Random issues of periodicals (unless we are missing them from a longer run; see above);
- Newspapers and popular magazines, e.g. Time or Sports Illustrated;
- Books in poor physical condition;
- Heavily marked up books.
