American Geographical Society Library (AGS)

AGS Library (east wing, 3rd floor)

This is one of the largest collections of maps (both historic and current), globes, atlases, photographs, digital data, geographic books, and periodicals.  The AGS Library is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Some of their materials circulate and can be checked out at the Circulation Desk on the first floor. If you need materials and cannot come in when the AGS Library is open, call 229-6282 because many AGS materials can be picked up after hours at the Circulation Desk if arrangements are made ahead of time.

For more information, visit the AGSL website -- or stop in!

Third Floor Stacks (west wing, 3rd floor)

Third Floor Stacks

The areas where materials are shelved are referred to as the "stacks."

Since we use the Library of Congress Classification System, call numbers begin with letters. There are signs on the shelves that indicate the call number range. Read the shelves from left to right. Look at the library catalog record for the needed item to locate the call number and then at the floor key to see which floor houses items beginning with the corresponding call number.

The west wing of the third floor houses call numbers A through L, and P.

(For example, the book, Criminal Justice Technology in the 21st Century, is housed on the third floor at the call number HV9950 .C76 2005. You will find many other books about Criminal Justice in the HV area of the third floor as well.)
