Compact Shelving, Stacks, and Sorting Room

Compact Shelving (east & west wings, lower level) are areas for older or discontinued bound periodicals, arranged by call number. In addition, more than one-half of the American Geographical Society (AGS) Library's circulating materials are located in Compact Shelving West.

The shelving units are high-density and move to allow access. To move the shelves to gain access to a specific bound periodical, use the buttons near the needed shelf. There are directions located throughout the shelving area, but contact the Circulation Desk (west wing, 1st floor) if you have difficulty or if the shelves are not operating properly.

Compact Shelving

If the periodical you need is in Compact Shelving, note the location in the PantherCat record. There are two areas of Compact Shelving in the lower level - east and west.

Tutoring & Academic Resource Center (TARC) Group Study Area (west wing, lower level), is a satellite group study area used by TARC. If you are interested in tutoring, their main office is Bolton 180.

Sorting Room

"Stacks" refers to the areas where materials in the general collection are shelved.

Because we use the Library of Congress Classification System, call numbers begin with letters. There are signs on the shelves that indicate the call number range. Read the shelves from left to right. The lower level stacks include the call numbers S-Z and are located in the east wing.

"Sorting Room" refers to the area where recently used books and bound periodicals are kept until they can be re-shelved. This area is open to the public and includes both the open shelves, the shelves inside this room and any book trucks outside.  If the book you are looking for isn’t on the shelf, we recommend you look for it in the nearest sorting area.  There are similar sorting areas on other floors – some are open shelves and some are small rooms, so look for the "Sorting Room" signs.
