February 16, 2009 NY Times
The Future of Reading

In Web Age, Library Job Gets Update

Please visit the February 16th NY Times and read this article. What this librarian is doing really isn't all that new - librarians have always taught information literacy and technology; but the article points out many important issues that affect EVERYONE in school, not just librarians. More than ever school librarians perform a critical role, yet librarians and libraries are often a top pick for budget cuts or elimination. Whether you plan to teach, become a media specialist, or have children in school this issue affects you. The article is not long and can be viewed at http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/16/books/16libr.html?pagewanted=2&_r=1&hp

This month are two special birthdays that lend themselves to curriculum ideas:

Charles Darwin, who became famous for his book "On the Origin of Species" was born on February 12, 1809.

The bicentennial of the birth of Abraham Lincoln occurs on February 12 as well.
