About the Collection

The UWM Book Arts Collection contains scanned images of selected artists’ books from the UWM Special Collections-Book Arts Collection.   The goal of the UWM Special Collections-Book Arts Collection has been to document and demonstrate the use of the book form as an art medium. The collection’s main focus is on examples of artists' books from the late nineteenth century to the present. Largely represented are examples of American book arts, especially those of the Upper Midwest. The collection includes artist-designed and handmade books, examples of fine printing, uses of handmade papers, examples of fine binding, innovative book structures, and typographic design and experimentation.  View UWM Special Collection's Collection Development Policies

The Digital Project

The books were scanned at the UWM Libraries using overhead and flatbed scanners.  Adobe Photoshop CS was used to match the digital images to the original.  The resulting digital master files are stored at the UWM Libraries in TIFF format. The images were then uploaded in CONTENTdm as compound objects. In conjunction with CONTENTdm, the OCR software-ABBYY FineReader-was used to create searchable text files and downloadable PDFs of each book.  Information for the metadata was taken from the MARC record in UWM’s OPAC, PantherCat.
