Lexis-Nexis Academic Guide

Lexis-Nexis Academic includes approximately 5,600 publications in the following subject areas: News, Business, Legal Research, Medical, and Reference. The full text for many of the documents is available. Years of coverage vary. To begin a search, select one of the five subject categories from the Lexis-Nexis Academic menu page.

     NEWS

To navigate between Quick News Search and Guided News Search, click the appropriate tab.

QUICK NEWS SEARCH (Basic Search)

  1. In the text box, enter a search term. Words listed as a phrase, will be searched as a phrase. In this search mode, Boolean operators (and, or, and not) cannot be used to refine a search, nor can truncation.
  2. Under �Date,� select the date range to be searched. Note: The default is �Previous six months;� other options are Today, Previous week, Previous month, Previous year, and Previous two years.
  3. Click �Search.� The news content of Lexis-Nexis will be searched (this includes the categories shown below under Guided News Search, #1).
Note: Other quick information options on this page include �Get a Case� (also found in Legal Research)
and �Company Information� (also found in Business).

GUIDED NEWS SEARCH (Guided Search)

  1. Select a News Category (Required)
    From the drop-down menu, select a news category from the options shown below:
    • General News � U.S. and international newspapers, magazines, journals, and newsletters.
    • Today's News � News articles updated throughout the day.
    • U.S. News � Newspaper and wires from a state or region.
    • World News � News from U.S. and international sources (English language).
    • News Wires � Wire service reports.
    • News Transcripts � Television and radio news broadcasts.
    • Arts & Sports News � Reviews, entertainment, and sports news.
    • Non-English Language News � Spanish, French, Dutch, Italian, and German newspapers and magazines.
    • Business News � Business newspapers, magazines, wires, and journals.
    • Legal News � Legal newspapers, magazines, and newsletters.
    • University News � Chronicle of Higher Education and college student newspapers.
    • Medical News � Health newsletters and more popular magazines.
  2. Select a News Source (Required)
    From the drop-down menu, select a news source. Options will vary based on the News Category
    selected.
    Note: Many of the Guided News Search source categories have multiple sets of publications
    that can be searched. Click the "Source List" link to view a list of publications available
    in a particular category.
    Examples of news sources are:
    • Today's Selected News Sources
    • Midwest Regional Sources
    • All available wire reports
    • Mergers & Acquisitions
  3. Enter Search Terms (Required)
    • In the first text box, enter the search term(s).
    • In the corresponding �in� drop-down menu, select which area of an article to search.
      Note: The default setting is Headline, Lead Paragraph(s), Terms; other options are Headline,
      Full Text, Caption, and Author.
    • Additional search terms may be added in the other text boxes, selecting from the �in� drop-down menu for each line.
    • Combine terms between the search boxes by "and, or, and not" or proximity by using the choices in the drop-down boxes.

    Note: The following forms of search syntax may be helpful when completing this part of the Guided News Search.

  1. Narrow to a Specific Date Range (Optional)
    The default covers documents published from the previous six months. Set other date limits by
    selecting options from the Date Range Options drop-down menu, or by entering specific
    years to be searched in the �From� and �To� text boxes.

  2. Search this Publication Title(s) (Optional)
    To limit the search to documents from a specific publication, click the �Source List� link for a listing
    of sources available for each category, and type the name of the publication in the text box.
  3. After the search is completed, click the "Search" button.
  4. Refer to the �Managing Results� section for viewing, marking, printing, and emailing search results.
  5. Note: The Contemporary Women's Issues database is included in the Guided News Search section (Business; Industry). To search in this database, type contemporary women's issues in the first text box and select Full Text from the drop-down menu. If desired, add additional search terms in the other text boxes.

      BUSINESS

SEARCHING: Follow the general guidelines for Quick or Guided search in the �News� section.
Choose from the following categories:

NEWS
  • Business News � Search within business, finance, and merger and acquisition news stories. Includes business articles from newspapers, magazines, journals, wires, and transcripts.
  • Industry & Market � Search within industry and trade journals from over 25 industries.

ACCOUNTING LITERATURE
  • Accounting � Search various accounting journals and literature.

COMPANY INFORMATION
  • Company Financial Reports - Access company descriptions and financial information by name, SIC industry code, or Ticker symbol for over 10,000 public companies. Stock analysts' earnings estimates are also available for selected companies, as well as annual reports from 1972 to 1995.

  • Company Profiles - Company information including executives, revenues and competitors. Sources include Hoover company reports, S&P Corporate Descriptions, international companies, and bankruptcy reports.

  • Compare Companies - Find companies based on one or more of the following variables: Sales, Net Income, Number of Employees, and Location.

  • SEC Filings & Reports � View financial statements and documents submitted by public companies to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Includes EDGAR filings, annual and quarterly reports, and proxy statements. Search by company name, ticker symbol, or SIC code.

BUSINESS RESOURCES
  • Directories � Search by keyword within various directories and reference sources to locate a variety of information, including company contact information, business opportunities with the U.S. and foreign governments, and SIC industry codes.

      LEGAL RESEARCH

SEARCHING: Follow the general guidelines for Quick or Guided search in the �News� section.

    • Legal News � Find articles from legal newspapers, magazines, & newsletters.
    • Law Reviews � Find articles from law reviews.

    Case Law

    • Get a Case � Find federal and state legal cases by legal citation or party names.
    • Shepard's for U.S. Supreme Court � Find Shepard's citations of U.S. Supreme Court cases from 1789 to the present.
    • Federal Case Law � Find decisions from all federal court levels.
    • State Case Law � Find state high court and appellate decisions.
    • Area of Law by Topic � Find cases on a variety of topics.
    Note: Get a Case is also available as a Quick search from the homepage.

    Codes and Regulations

    • Federal Code � View the U.S. code, U.S. Constitution, and federal court rules.
    • Federal Regulations � Find federal regulations, agency opinions, and U.S. Attorney General Opinions.
    • State Codes � Find statutory laws, court rules from all states, and Attorneys General opinions from all states.
    • Tax Law � Includes the IRS Bulletin, tax regulations, and more.

    International Legal Materials

    • Canadian Legislative Materials � Canadian Current Legislative Awareness and Canada Federal Legislation (including Consolidated Statutes & Consolidated Regulations).
    • Canadian Statutes & Regulations � Statutes and regulations of Canada, Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario.
    • EU Law (CELEX) � European Union law.
    • Commonwealth and Foreign Nations � Case law from various countries and treaties and other international agreements.

    Patent Research

    • Patents � Search the combined file of the utility, plant, and design patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office from 1971 to present.
    • Class � Find patent numbers by classification.
    • Manual � Manual of Classification.

    Career Information

    • Martindale-Hubbell� Law Directory Listings � Provides details on more than 900,000 lawyers and law firms around the world.
    • Law School Directories � Provides details on over 250 U.S. schools.
    • Choosing a Law School � NALP's Degrees of Difference.

  2. Enter the appropriate search term(s) or legal citation, using the search tips described previously.

      MEDICAL

SEARCHING: Follow the general guidelines for Quick or Guided search in the �News� section.
  1. Choose from the following categories:
    • Medical News � Articles from medical and health news sources covering healthcare.
    • Medical Journals � Articles from medical and health journals covering a wide range of medical topics.
    • Abstracts � Basic searching of the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE database.
  2. To locate articles, follow the general guidelines for Quick or Guided search in the �News� section of this document.

SEARCH RESULTS: Refer to the "Managing Results" section for viewing, marking, printing, and
emailing search results.

      REFERENCE

SEARCHING: Follow the general guidelines for Quick or Guided search in the �News� section.

  1. Choose from the following categories:
    • Biographical Information � Biographical sources and selected biographical news stories concerning politicians, business executives, and related.
    • Country Profiles � Concise facts & statistics about countries.
    • Polls and Surveys � From the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research.
    • Quotations � Over 10,000 quotes from the famous and not-so-famous.
    • State Profiles � Concise facts and statistics about each state.
    • World Almanac � Quick facts on any subject.
  2. Enter a search term(s) in the text box, using the search tips described previously.

emailing search results.

      LOCATING A SPECIFIC PUBLICATION

  1. From the main screen or any subject category screen, click on �Sources� at the top of the page. The Source List screen appears.
  2. Type the name of the source wanted and click on Find Title, or browse the alphabetical list.
  3. When the results list appears, there will be two hyperlinks. "About this Title" will link to a description of the publication and coverage dates. "Search this Title" goes to the appropriate search form, allowing a search of that publication individually.

      MANAGING RESULTS

VIEWING AND MARKING RESULTS

  1. To view the citation and full text (if available) for a document, click on the link in the Document List.
  2. Choose between four different display formats to view the search results:
    • Document List � Displays the basic citations for each search result in a numbered list.
    • Expanded List � For each article, displays the citation and the search term(s) in context surrounded by approximately five words of text.
    • KWIC (Key Word in Context) � Displays portions of each article containing the search term(s) surrounded by approximately 20 words of text.
    • Full � Displays the full text of each document, if available.
  3. To mark multiple citations for printing, place a check in the box next to each article in the Document List. Note: It is only possible to print multiple citations in either the Document or Expanded formats. Printing in either KWIC (Key Words In Context) or Full formats must be done one record at a time.

Warning: Upon editing a search or initiating a new search, the checkmarks for all marked records are deleted. Therefore, make sure to save, print, or email marked records before beginning a new search.

SORTING RESULTS

  1. To sort by relevance, click �Sort by Relevance.�
  2. To sort by date, click �Sort by Date,� where available.

PRINTING RESULTS

Document or Expanded Format
  1. To print citations, click the red �Print� button.
  2. At the Print screen, select the records to be printed (i.e., all citations, all checked citations, or the numbers of specific citations) and then select the format in which they should appear (Document or Expanded).
  3. Click "Display Citations."
  4. To print, select "Print" from the browser's File menu.

KWIC or Full Format
  1. To print citations, first display the entry in the desired format (KWIC or Full).
  2. Click the red �Print� button and then �Display Document.�
  3. To print, select "Print" from the browser's File menu. Note: Each document must be printed one at a time.

EMAILING RESULTS

Document or Expanded Format
  1. In the Document or Expanded List screen, click the red �Email� button.
  2. At the Email screen, select the records to be emailed (i.e., all citations, all checked citations, or the numbers of specific citations).
  3. In the �To this E-mail address,� text box, enter a full email address.
  4. In the �Add this note to the body of the E-mail� text box, enter a subject or note for personal reference, if desired.
  5. To send the email, click �E-mail.�

KWIC or Full Format
  1. In the KWIC or Full view screen, click the red �Email� button.
  2. At the Email screen, in the �E-mail this document to this email address� text box, enter a full email address.
  3. In the �Add this note to the body of the E-mail� text box, enter a subject or note for personal reference, if desired.
  4. To send the email, click �E-mail.� Note: Each document must be emailed one at a time.
