When searching for a review of a specific book, the time the search takes can be shortened by having the name of the author, the title of the book, and the earliest date of publication. Any missing parts of this information can usually be obtained from PantherCat, the UWM Libraries online catalog, or another catalog. Begin a search for the earliest publication of the title wanted, and check at least five years beyond the publication date. Reviews are usually done on the first publication date, not on reprint dates.

Reviews are usually indexed under the author's name, by author and title, under a subject or publication type of "book reviews", or, in print resources, in a special section or appendix for reviews. Each resource varies and should be checked to see how that resource is arranged. Periodical indexes did not always cover book reviews located in the journals indexed, therefore the date an index exists and the dates of book review coverage are not always consistent. Titles and call numbers of indexes listed may vary slightly over the years.

A considerable number of reviews appear in publications which concentrate in book reviews. The indexes to these publications will cover the largest number of titles and should be checked first. Secondarily, resources which index general publications that cover a wide range of topics, should be utilized. From those resources, the more specialized subject indexes, which also cover book reviews, should be checked.

The sources listed are a selection of the more comprehensive book review sources. Choose the sources which correspond to the subject matter of the book. For other, more focused resources, do a "Keyword (and, or, not)" search in the library catalog using a specific subject combined with the heading "book reviews", e.g., history and "book reviews" or "american fiction" and "book reviews." Be aware that NOT ALL BOOKS PUBLISHED ARE REVIEWED. For studies of literary works, beyond a review, search the MLA Bibliography.

GENERAL RESOURCES

For Contemporary and Older Titles:

• The major sources covering book reviews exclusively are the Book Review Digest, (REF) Z 1219 .C95, with coverge back to 1905, and the Book Review Index, (REF) Z 1035 .A1 .B6, with coverage back to 1965. These indexes are the most comprehensive book review sources.

• Indexes covering a wide range of general periodicals will include the book reviews in those journals. The Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature, (REF) AI 3 .R48, and the current title, Readers' Guide Full Text, available online, will cover reviews published from 1900 (online from 1984).

• The New York Times has a wide selection of reviews. The New York Times Index, (compact shelving) AI 21 .N44, will cover reviewed titles back to 1898. For current materials, see also Proquest Newspapers. The New York Times is available online from 1851-@3 years back at Proquest Historical Newspapers: New York Times.

• A major resource for British publications is the Times Index, (REF) AI 21 .T46. This index will cover materials from the London Times newspaper from 1790, however reviews are comprehensively indexed only from 1906 to the present. The microfilm of the newspaper is located in the Microforms area, (MF) AN 04, from 1788.

For Contemporary Titles:

• Covering a broader range of general periodicals than does Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature, Academic Search, indexing 3,200 general current affairs journals, is available online from 1984.

• Related to the New York Times and (London) Times mentioned, other newspapers will also include book reviews. The online Proquest Newspapers covers a number of major U.S. newspapers from 1989.

For Older Titles:

• The predecessor to Readers' Guide, the Nineteenth Century Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature, 1890-1899, with supplementary indexing 1900-1922, (REF) AI 3 .R496, covers those early years.

• The resource, Combined Retrospective Index to Book Reviews in Humanities Journals, 1802-1974, (REF) Z 6265 .C65 1982, covers an extensive period of time.

• The resource, Combined Retrospective Index to Book Reviews in Scholarly Journals, 1886-1974, (REF) Z 1035 .A1 C62x, covers a variety of subject fields.

• The National Library Service Cumulative Book Review Index, 1905-1974, (REF) Z 1035 .1 .N35x, covers titles reviewed during that time span.

• The Guide to Critical Reviews of U.S. Fiction, 1870-1910, Z 1225 .E35, covers reviews of American fictional works published around the end of the nineteenth century.

• The Internationale Bibliographie der Rezensionen Wissenschaftlicher Literatur (International Bibliography of Book Reviews of Scholarly Literature), Compact Shelving West: AI 9 .I48x, covers non-English language materials from 1971-1987.
