Library Guides

LEGAL INFORMATION SOURCES

The UWM Libraries hold many major sources of legal information. This includes primary law, such as federal and state constitutions, federal and Wisconsin statutes (laws) and regulations, and the decisions of court cases from federal and state supreme courts and federal courts of appeals and district courts. The Libraries also have secondary sources such as legal encyclopedias, indexes to legal periodicals, and treatises. The Libraries is a partial depository of United States and Wisconsin government documents, and holdings include federal and state publications related to the law. Considerable federal legal materials, and some state information, is available through Internet sources; selected sites are mentioned with specific titles. Sources may be governmental, educational, or commercial and vary in currency, value, and methods of access.

LexisNexis Academic^TM is a valuable resource covering select periodicals, federal and state case law, U.S. laws and regulations. many state laws, U.S. patents, and some Canadian and European legal materials.

WestLaw Campus^TM is another valuable resource with full text of many state supreme and federal court cases, laws, and regulations. It also indexes select periodicals and has the full text, updated, American Jurisprudence.
