The electronic Early English Books Online (EEBO) indexes and makes available contents from Wings Short-Title Catalogue ...1641-1700, Pollard and Redgraves Short-Title Catalogue ...1475-1640, and the Thomason Tracts 1640-1661. The full project is expected to take multiple years to complete. Currently, over 110,000 titles are described in the online index; including the entire contents from the Thomason Tracts. Most are page image or full text (as PDF files (Adobe Acrobat)), and can be printed or downloaded. Works by Bacon, Malory, Galileo, musical texts by Henry Purcell, and novels of Aphra Behn are among the texts available. Many are primary resources and include sermons, prayer books, pamphlets, and proclamations.
Copy quality and legibility vary considerably, based on the quality of the original copy. Type face, bleeding of ink, irregularities in the printing process, etc., affect the overall quality of these primary items, which affect legibility. Digitized images were produced from the microfilm copy, not from the original item. Poorest quality items have not yet been digitized.
Many of the titles are available in the UWM Libraries in microfilm and are listed individually in PantherCat; check the catalog for items of interest.
SEARCHING
Basic Search
Search keywords in one or more of the categories given. Enter word(s) in the text box(es) and click on SEARCH. Truncation, using an asterisk "*," is useful for searching; for example, sermon* will retrieve sermon, sermons, sermonize. "Keyword" will search all fields, including the contents notes in the full citation. The use of Boolean terms "and, or, not" is useful in composing a search strategy. Be careful of spelling variations, especially with the non-standardized forms common during this time frame. Searches can also be limited by publication date or date range.

Results lists of large numbers can be refined by adding terms to the search in any of the same selection of categories. Click "Refine Search" from the results list and add additional terms in the appropriate text box(es).
Advanced Search
Use the advanced search to search terms in the same fields as the Basic Search or the added categories of illustration, country of origin, language, etc. Type word(s) in the text box(es) and click on SEARCH.

RESULTS

Entries in the results list will provide basic bibliographic information. Each citation has symbols to indicate format(s) available. Some entries have the full citation only, others have full imaging. Click on the choice to view the citation or the full item/images. To view the full item page by page, select document image. To view the entire text as a PDF file, download the item to a disk and then view via Adobe Acrobat: many PDF files cannot be viewed online. Those entries which have PDF files available for viewing online will have the icon
in the citation/record. Some images can be downloaded as TIFF files.

Mark individual items of interest, then click on
at the top of the screen to view the selected items. Citations of marked items may be printed, emailed, or downloaded.
Illustration categories may not be pictorial, but will include charts, musical notations, printers marks, title page borders, portraits, maps, genealogical tables, heraldic symbols, etc.
Results may be sorted by author, publication date, or title. Search results may be further refined via the same method as for a Basic Search. A REMINDER: Be careful of spelling variations, especially with the non-standardized forms common during this time frame; also many religious tracts were written in Latin.
A REMINDER: Copy quality and legibility vary considerably, based on the quality of the original copy. Type face, bleeding of ink, irregularities in the printing process, etc., affect the overall quality of these primary items, which affect legibility. Digitized images were produced from the microfilm copy, not from the original item. Poorest quality items have not yet been digitized.
VIEWING/PRINTING/DOWNLOADING
From the document images, view and print each page. Window size for viewing and size of image can be adjusted. Use "Adjust view to print" to help adjust for the best setting. The use of PRINT CURRENT VIEW is also valuable to adjust the image - what is seen may not print properly. Copy quality is problematic, therefore legibility versus print size may need to be adjusted. The default setting is set for the best for an individual page, generally 60-65%. Full 100% has better legibility but contents may not all fit on one printed sheet.

Full text documents may be downloaded to a disk as PDF files, and may be printed from a disk using Adobe Acrobat. Formating for printing as a PDF is potentially superior. Viewing full text as a PDF document is not always available online.
