Individual Federal Soil Surveys are searchable in PantherCat, the UWM online catalog. Print surveys are located in Compact Shelving East (lower level, east wing). The basic call number for surveys is S 591 .1. For example, the call number for Brown County, Wisconsin published in 1974 is S 591 .1 .W6 B76 1974. The scheme of classification used permits soil surveys to be shelved geographically, by state and county.
To verify if and when a specific county has been surveyed, consult the "List of Soil Surveys by state", http://soils.usda.gov/survey/printed_surveys/, and the "Online Soil Survey Manuscripts," http://soils.usda.gov/survey/online_surveys/
STATE SURVEYS AND RELATED MATERIALS
Not all states publish soil surveys, but many states produce documents that are similar to soil surveys. These documents may range from general soil texts to soil maps to supplemental data for previously completed soil surveys.
Fo further help with searching, inquire at the RIS AskALibrarian Desk.
FOREIGN COUNTRIES
Foreign countries may also publish soil surveys or related material. However, these types of publications may be more difficult to locate. Most foreign country soil information available at the UWM Libraries can be found in the S 599 call number area (lower level, east wing). These call numbers are subdivided geographically:
If information is unavailable at the UWM Libraries, WorldCat is an alternative that will allow keyword searching of materials available in other libraries.
ELECTRONIC RESOURCES
These databases may be accessed through the UWM Libraries "Resources A-Z" page. After locating a useful set of citations, look for full text availability or use the FindIt link; for known journal articles, use the "Citation Linker" list to verify if UWM Libraries has access to those materials in electronic or print format. For further assistance, inquire at the RIS AskALibrarian Desk.

After locating a useful set of citations, search PantherCat to verify if UWM Libraries own these materials. If further assistance is needed, inquire at the RIS AskALibrarian Desk.
UWM Libraries StaffSoil Surveys, published by the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service, Department of Agriculture, include soil maps and interpretations used in giving technical assistance and guidance about soil selection, use, and management. Predictions of soil behavior for selected land uses, limitations and hazards inherent in the soil, improvements needed to overcome these limitations, and the effect of selected land uses on the environment are also included. A good resource for soils information is "Keys to Soils Taxonomy". 11th edition. For more information see the SOILS website: http://soils.usda.gov/.

SSURGO is the most detailed level of soil mapping done by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). SSURGO digitizing duplicates the original soil survey maps. This level of mapping is designed for use by landowners, townships, and county natural resource planning and management staff. SSURGO data are available for selected counties and areas throughout the United States and its territories.

The Wisconsin Soil Program includes the detailed digitized soil maps for each soil survey area in Wisconsin (spatial data) and the accompanying soil property and interpretations database (tabular data).
