Golda Meir Library Renovation

Our Renovation Begins

After almost two years of planning and fundraising, our renovation project has been launched. In November, Titan Building Co. of New Berlin, WI, was chosen as the project’s general contractor and that same month they began work on the second floor of the West Wing, creating offices for staff who will be moving upstairs to make way for the new Daniel M. Soref Learning Commons.

On December 5 we celebrated the beginning of construction with a “Wall-Breaking” ceremony as part of First Friday, the monthly social gathering of UWM faculty and staff, with community donors in attendance as well. Co-sponsoring the event was University Information Technology Services (UITS), who will be supporting the technology in the new commons.Students

The West Wing entrance closed on December 21, at the end of the fall semester, and will reopen in fall 2009. Until then, West Wing First Floor services, including Circulation, Reference, Multicultural Information, and Interlibrary Loan, will be available in the East Wing. (All of our services will continue operating during the renovation.)

To assist you in finding the temporary location of services, we have staffed a Welcome Station in the lobby of the East Wing, created a handout with directions, and placed directional signage on the walls. We are also offering a new service to retrieve and hold books for users.

As you walk by the West Wing of the library this spring and summer, you will be able to catch glimpses of our transformation. The Daniel M. Soref Learning Commons will be a welcoming and technology-rich learning space, providing critical support for student recruitment and retention.
