This small exhibition highlighting Special Collections acquisitions in the book arts presents a selection of materials in the book arts acquired from 1994 to 1996. It is divided into three sections, representing the collection's three geographic areas of concentration: Wisconsin (Arcadian, Iguana, Jubilee, Midnight Paper Sales, Perishable, Silver Buckle, Tiramisu); the Midwest (Minnesota Center for Book Arts, Pentagram, Windhover); and parts East and West (Appletree Alley, Gehenna, Janus, Nexus, Peter and Donna Thomas, Red Door Studio).

S pecial Collections at the Golda Meir Library maintains a fine collection of materials in the book arts and the twentieth-century fine-press movement. Resources from this collection, built over the past thirty years, augment Special Collections' holdings in the history of printing and publishing, and serve to demonstrate the development and progress of the book arts in this century. Special Collections' fine-press and book-arts collections also serve as a unique resource for UWM's Department of Art, especially in support of the emerging curriculum in the book arts and the UWM fine press, FenWood Imprints.

Wisconsin has a strong tradition of printing, publishing, and fine-press production. UWM's collections not only serve as an outstanding resource for the university and Milwaukee communities, but also complement the State's other fine collections of book-arts holdings, including those in Special Collections, Memorial Library, and the Kohler Art Library, both on the campus of UW-Madison, and the Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts in Racine.

With additional support from the administration of the Golda Meir Library, the Friends of the Golda Meir Library, and the UWM Department of Art, as well as the generosity of many individuals, book artists, and fine-press printers, Special Collections has been successful in building and promoting its book-arts collections and in establishing a number of book-arts related programs. This small exhibit is as much a tribute to their efforts as it is a demonstration of progress in this area over a two year period.
