Acquisitions in the Book Arts: Jubilee Press

Wisconsin

African Proverbs. Oak Park, Ill.: Jubilee Press, 1993.
Call Number: (SPL) ANA 0616

Limited to an unspecified number, this charm book is meant to be worn for positive energy. It was compiled, designed, and printed by Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr. on handmade abaca paper from Caren Heft's Root River Papermill. Each page was hand cut in the shape of a snake for wisdom. The African motifs were hand painted and gilded with 23 karat gold.

Amos Kennedy, one of a very small number of African American fine-press printers in the country, moved to Milwaukee in 1994. He was a featured presenter in the 1995 Book FOR[U]MS speaker series. Works from Jubilee Press were featured in the 1995 UWM Library exhibit The Contemporary Fine Press.
