Limited to an edition of 174 numbered and 26 lettered copies (this is copy 80), Farmers was designed and hand printed by Gaylord Schanilec using Eric Gill's Joanna from the Los Angeles Type Foundry. The color wood engravings are by Gaylord Schanilec and were cut in end-grain maple blocks made by Jim Reynolds. Hand bound into boards at the Campbell-Logan Bindery, the numbered copies are bound in cloth, and the lettered copies are full-bound in leather. The text was derived from recorded interviews with farmers in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin conducted by Gaylord Schanilec and edited by Clayton Schanilec. The project was made possible with funds from the Jerome Foundation provided through the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Gaylord Schanilec was a featured presenter in the 1995 Book FOR[U]MS speaker series. Works from Midnight Paper Sales Press were featured in the 1995 UWM Library exhibit The Contemporary Fine Press. |
