This edition is edited by Samuel Johnson's biographer, James Boswell. Though its size is comparable to volumes in the 1773 Johnson and Steevens edition, this variorum edition contains only two plays with notes. Jaques' speech, now distributed over four pages to accommodate a greater number of more voluminous notes, would take up even more space but for Boswell's ploy: "On account of the length of the notes on this passage, I have thrown them to the end of the play."
