Knight's eight volume edition represents a type extremely popular in the nineteenth century, the profusely and eclectically illustrated Shakespeare. Hundreds of engravings, illustrating everything from a goitered peasant, "dewlapped like the bull," and a view of "Naples from the Sea" to scenes representing incidents in the plays, helped to make Knight's edition a huge success.
