Unquiet: Four Poems by Patricia Gima. Milwaukee: Gokiburi Press, 1996.
Limited to an edition of twenty copies. Hand set in Baskerville type on Japanese mulberry, Thai, and handmade papers. Collagraphs by Lia Gima. Printed for the 1995 UMW Book Arts Workshop.
As an illustrator and book designer my goal is to depict my emotional response to the visceral imagery of the written word. My pictures are abstract, based on my study of biology (animals, protozoa, fungi) and on my own experiences with the emotional material in these poems (fear, entrapment, isolation from the self). Rather than illustrations of specific objects, people or scenes from the poems, I prefer images that echo each poem's energy through line, form, and repetition. The book's overall design mirrors the psychological structure--fearful constraint or inward unfolding--of the poem collection as a whole.
