Letterpress Works by UWM Faculty and Staff
STEVEN KRUEGER
Grounds Worker, Physical Plant Services
September 1953. Milwaukee: Turkey Red Press, 1995.
A letter written by Anna Schmitt to her daughter Marcella. Set in Baskerville type on
domestic etching paper. Printed for the 1995 UMW Book Arts Workshop.
With a background in fibers, "crafting" a book is a natural extension of weaving and patchwork.
Setting type and manually printing one page at a time recalls sleying a reed and rhythmic throwing
of a shuttle; trimming, folding and binding that of cutting, piecing and stitching a quilt. The hand
of one is reflected in the other. Each has a story to tell.
