As a graphic designer, I am more interested in the fine art applications of design than those motivated by client-based design for the marketplace. My work primarily utilizes handset lead type printed in the letterpress method combined with relief printed images in the tradition o fine printing and the book arts. I print broadsides, large single sheets with images and type, because of
their immediacy and ability to explore the relationship between image and text. My broadsides attempt to reveal the unique beauty - which only letterpress printing can achieve--of the physical impression of words pressed into the paper surface. I prefer to draw contour line images that can be easily translated into relief plates and printed in the same method as the handset type. Recently
my work has researched the combination of traditional relief printing methods with computer-generated typography and imagery.
In my work I gravitate toward personal themes and subjects, often based on occasions, personal
celebrations, social satire, human indulgences, and poetry. I try to approach these subjects with
delicacy and humor, to marry image and text in a meaningful way.
