Numerous changes have occurred in nursing throughout the course of the twentieth century. The advent of new drugs, new techniques and new technologies has placed greater responsibilities on nurses and has mandated radical changes in nursing care. Historical nursing literature reflects the move toward specialization as the role of the nurse expanded and nursing specialties evolved.
