Week of April 3-9, 2006 The cover of this 1963 paperback may be more suggestive of romance than the cover of the original 1955 hardcover, but the narratives are identical. Hilda Baker: School Nurse exemplifies a particular type of nurse romance novel that also served as a recruitment tool for the nursing profession. In this novel, the author went so far as to include occasional, non-fictional footnotes; for example: “There are now some 8,800 school nurses in the United States. It is an attractive field of nursing, especially for those who like to work with children. There is also a growing need for very well-prepared nurses in the health offices of colleges and universities.” -- Exceprt from Hilda Baker: School Nurse, by Dorothy Deming. 1963. From a gift of over 425 nurse romance novels from Leslie Bellavance. |
