Lavinia freshened her face and applied a light touch of powder and lipstick, just as she had done on the wards.  Occasionally, when she had gone out for the evening, she had worn a little more make-up, including on more than one occasion eye make-up, but Matron had not really approved, so that on the whole the nurses at Smeeton tended to neglect this side of affairs!
