It’s thinking about what our 30,000 UWM students need to succeed 24/7. From course tutors and academic advisers, to fitness and health resources – we’ve got your needs in mind. We’ve also got nightlife, weekend programing and those in-between class times covered too.
Activities & Recreation
Free time? Yes, you’ll have some. Use it to meet people, have a say in campus life, prepare for your career and make the most of Milwaukee. Arts and entertainment are woven into the campus culture. The Peck School of the Arts hosts more than 300 events yearly. More than 300 student-led clubs and organizations span the interest and cultural spectrum of Wisconsin’s most diverse university. Not sure where to start? Let the Center for Student Involvement help you get involved. Make an impact on UWM and Milwaukee by volunteering with the Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research. Take a Spring Break trip with Habitat for Humanity. Coordinate a food drive. Run for an elected position in a student organization.
The Student Union is the capital of campus. From Cinco de Mayo to Kwanzaa, scholarship receptions to a talk by Pulitzer-Prize winners, the Student Union is home to drop-in student centers, cultural celebrations and relevant programs and performances. Get closer to arts and culture beyond your own perspective. Attend a Distinguished Lecture Series. Get some grub at the Gasthaus. Go bowling or play billiards in the Union Recreation Center. Get creative at the Studio Arts and Craft Centre. Catch an indie film at the Union Theatre. Get book-smarter with our Libraries events. Explore our specialized Multicultural, Women's, and LGBT resource centers. There’s more to the Union than we could possibly fit here, or than you could do in a year.
Athletics & Fitness
Play, cheer, compete, chill out. There are lots of ways to break a sweat, blow off steam and show your Panther Pride. Panther Pride is knowing you belong to a Division 1 university that enrolls 300 of the hardest-working college athletes in America. We boast Horizon League championship titles in men’s and women’s basketball, a top-ranked and nationally competitive women’s soccer team, and lay claim to the only D1 men’s baseball team in Wisconsin. Year-round athletics on campus and in nearby Milwaukee venues give every student opportunities to check out the hottest (most affordable) games in town.
The Klotsche Center and Pavilion is a spacious state of the art facility, built in 2006, to serve the fitness and rec needs of all UWM students. Intramurals at UWM explore 12 specialty and popular sports, and welcome more than 10,000 students. Rent gear, fix gear and book weekend adventures through the UWM Adventure Center, at student-friendly prices. Bowling and table tennis are real sports, but the debate about video games rages on. Play all three at the Union Recreation Center. Look for spontaneous acts of organized athleticism happening anywhere in campus. From hacky sack on Spaights Plaza to frisbee at Cambridge Commons, there’s lots of opportunity to get your game on.
Lounges & Hanging out
At UWM, you’ll find plenty of options to hang out or lie-low, depending on how you like to unwind. In the Student Union there are a number of quiet areas to sit, read, or study, including the Alumni Fireside Lounge or the 3rd Floor Lounge outside the Student Activities Office. Both can be enjoyed alone, or with a small group of friends. If quiet conversation is more to your liking, you can visit the Grind Coffee Shop or 8th Note Coffee House, which features open mic nights, poetry readings and occasional live music. But, if being in the middle of the action, with activity, games and lots of students sounds like your kind of place, then check out the Gasthaus, which features pub fare, and big screen projectors.
Students in our residence halls can also take advantage of the late-night dining options and lounges, like Palm Gardens in Sandburg Commons, the Grind Coffee Shop in Cambridge Commons, or the RiverView Café. And all residence halls have community lounges in each of our floors/houses, for friends to meet, study or relax.
Inclusion & Diversity
Diversity is not a number or a quota at UWM – Wisconsin’s most diverse and dynamic institution of higher education. UWM faculty, students and staff provide cultural programming, support services, academics and international opportunities that support the full depth, breadth and diversity of the human experience. From thousands of first-generation college students and the largest population of student veterans in Wisconsin to a nationally known LGBT Resource Center, UWM strives to be a place where all feel welcome and supported, invigorated and educated. You’ll find UWM to be a richer, more dynamic and academically rigorous place because of this diversity.
