Online narrated presentations using Adobe Presenter

Narrated PowerPoint presentations are one way that instructors can deliver course content and establish instructor presence in online and blended courses.  In addition, students are able to view this web-based material on demand and review the material as needed via Desire2Learn (D2L). Narrated presentations make course material more accessible for students with diverse learning preferences and styles.

The Learning Technology Center (LTC) supports Adobe Presenter for the creation of voice‐over PowerPoint presentations. It is a “plug‐in” for Microsoft PowerPoint that converts narrated PowerPoint presentations into interactive multimedia presentations which are designed to run smoothly over the web.

UW‐Milwaukee has acquired a license for Adobe Presenter through UW‐System.  The software is available, at no cost, to instructors teaching at UWM.

The LTC offers a 2-hour workshop for instructors which addresses technical and pedagogical considerations for delivering online presentations. It includes hands-on training and step-by-step instruction for creating narrated PowerPoint presentations using Adobe Presenter.  (Although a Windows computer is required to create Adobe Presenter materials, students are able to view materials on either a Mac or Windows computer, using a free browser-based Flash Player.)  Participants will create a brief sample presentation during the workshop.

Once you have attended the workshop, you may access the downloadable software through a D2L course site, called “Adobe Presenter.”  This site also contains step-by-step instructions for creating narrated PowerPoint presentations.

Digital video creation and online delivery

The use of short video clips in the online environment provides 'real-world' examples which can enrich student learning in many disciplines.  The Learning Technology Center (LTC) supports Pinnacle Studio 12 for creating digital video clips for delivery through D2L. The LTC offers a 2-hour workshop for instructors which will examine pedagogical best practices for the use of digital video from existing sources. The workshop will also address the technical requirements and limitations of the medium.  Participants gain hands-on experience capturing a video clip, rendering it for use on the web, and uploading it to D2L. Although a PC Windows environment is required to digitize and render digital video clip using Pinnacle Studio 12, the final output will be a Flash file which may be viewed by students using either a Mac or a PC.

Once you have attended the workshop, you may access a step-by-step helpsheet for creating digitizing and rendering digital video clip using Pinnacle Studio 12 is available in the D2L course site called “Digital Video Resources.” Please register for the "Digitizing video content for online and blended courses" workshop at: http://LTCworkshops.uwm.edu

The LTC has several computer stations available for digital video capturing and rendering. If you have attended the workshop and would like to schedule a workstation, please send an email address to: LTC-media@uwm.edu.

Online real-time interaction using Adobe Connect

Synchronous tools can be used for real time communication among students and instructors via the web.  Real-time online interaction can be valuable in specific pedagogical situations, such as virtual office hours, student advising and mentoring, remote guest presentations, small group project planning, and live student presentations and debates.  Synchronous tools provide opportunities for spontaneous, media-rich online interaction among instructors and students in blended and fully online courses.

UW‐Milwaukee has acquired a license for Adobe Connect through UW‐System. Instructors may use a virtual meeting room for their UWM courses at no cost. Adobe Connect provides a variety of communication modes; for example, text-only chat, voice and video interaction, and document and application sharing. The Learning Technology Center (LTC) offers a 2-hour workshop which addresses both technical and pedagogical considerations for the use of Adobe Connect in the online teaching environment. It includes hands-on training and examples for managing real-time interaction using Adobe Connect, as well as procedures for integrating this tool with your D2L course site.
