TIER 1, CLASS #2

This four-day training is designed to help participants become familiar with child welfare laws and their application. The training will cover Chapters 48 and 938 of Wisconsin Statues, the Indian Child Welfare Act, and other relevant legal requirements of child welfare. In addition, special emphasis will be paid to the delivery of helpful pre- and post- dispositional services to families.

Note New Schedule:  Participants will report to class 1 day a week for 4 consecutive weeks.

• Information regarding the development of legal mandates and rights of client families and foster families in child welfare services and the legal responsibilities of service providers, and along with the needs and rights of all parties in the child welfare system (children, parents, caregivers, and social workers).


• A detailed guide to implement Chapter 48; participants will become familiar with legal terms used throughout Chapter 48 and 938.


• The interface of Children's Code, worker responsibilities and role of the court when assuring safety and permanence for children through termination of parental rights when necessary.


• Information on the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). Understanding this historical experience in the National Child Welfare System and the legislative and application of laws to protect these children and their culture.


• A focus on the social worker as a court witness.
