Supervisory
Module 1: Administrative Supervision

Description:

Supervisor Core Series: Putting the Pieces Together

Effective supervision spans three main areas (Administrative, Educational, and Supportive Supervision) that, while related, are also distinct. Each is an important component or piece of the bigger picture puzzle of child welfare supervision. The 9-day supervisor curriculum developed by the Butler Institute is competency-based so that training participants attain the level of proficiency designated by the competencies. Each 3-day module, ideally delivered between 3-5 weeks apart, emphasizes self-reflection and application to the unique circumstances of each supervisor. All modules are highly interactive and accommodate a variety of learning styles to maximize the learning experience.

This curriculum was funded in part by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Children’s Bureau, Washington, D.C., as a product of the Western Regional Recruitment and Retention Project (Grant #90CT0117). Revisions to the curriculum were supported by a contract with the Wyoming Department of Family Services. Support to adapt the curriculum for use by any state was provided by the National Resource Center for Organizational Improvement, a service of the Children’s Bureau.

Module I Training Description: Administrative Supervision focuses on those areas of supervision related to the efficient and effective delivery of services. This module stresses the importance of understanding one’s own management style within the context of the agency’s mission and vision and administrative structure and focuses on agency goals and outcomes. Key concepts covered in this module include: management styles; the use of power; advocacy; recruitment and selection of workers; change management; transitioning from peer to supervisor; and performance management.

NOTE:  "Administrative Supervision" is the first of three modules for the new supervisory training titled, "Putting the Pieces Together."  Supervisors should take modules in sequence.
