| In June 1988, a group of Milwaukee community leaders and school principals collaborated with UW-Milwaukee, Council for the Spanish Speaking, Inc., and UW System's Minority Information Center (now named the Multicultural Center for Educational Excellence) to reward parents for their exceptional participation in the education of their children. The involvement of these parents in their children's education was identified by the school officials as a crucial factor in their children's academic success. The parents and their children are honored at an annual "Education: A Family Affair" banquet held on the UW-Milwaukee campus. About 15 to 17 Milwaukee area schools (primarily from Milwaukee Public Schools) participate in this event each year. | |

Since 1994, the Family Affair event has been implemented annually by its Organizing Committee. The annual event honors approximately 120 parents from 15 schools, presents $250* U.S. Savings Bonds to 30 of these parents, and awards a $500* U.S. Savings Bond to one or two Parent-of-the-Year recipients. In addition, three to six community leaders are honored each year for their exceptional contributions to education and community service. A list of the Parent-of-the Year Award and Community Leadership Award recipients since 1988 is included in Attachment B. Since 1994, Jill Geisler, leadership and management leader of the Poynter Institute, and Ivy Santiago-Covert, director of Bilingual/Multicultural Programs at Milwaukee Public Schools, have volunteered their services as the masters of ceremony for this very worthwhile parent event. A list of previous winners and keynote speakers are listed below. |
