Chancellor Carlos E. Santiago has announced the launch of the NCAA Recertification process for the UWM Department of Athletics. In 1999, the campus was awarded an initial certification from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). This certification confirmed the university’s role in ensuring that academics is fully integrated into the mission and vision of our athletic programs, that the well-being of our student athletes is addressed, and that we are in full compliance in our governing and rules responsibilities. At this time, the campus will apply for its continuing certification as part of a process initiated by NCAA. “This eighteen month campus project will be transparent and reflective in its work. It is our opportunity to continue to promote best practices in all aspects of our athletic programs – administratively, academically, and respectful of the student’s journey as a member of our campus family,” says Dr. Joan Prince, who was appointed by the Chancellor to lead this process. The overall project Steering Committee consists of representatives from governance, faculty, academic staff, student athletes, alums, community supporters, and student government. Committee members began their work in September, 2007 and expect to submit their report to the NCAA by April 28, 2008. A peer review team will visit the campus in September, 2008. Final certification results are expected in February, 2009.
