University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee

April 22, Physics Colloquium

The UWM PhysicsDepartment will host a special colloquium in conjunction with the UW-Madison Dept. of Physics.

The colloquium, entitled, “First Light with the HAWC Gamma-Ray Observatory,” will start at 4:00 PM in the UWM Physics lecture hall 137.

The colloquium will be presented by Stefan Westerhoff, a member of the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center.

HAWC (short for the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Gamma-Ray Observatory) is an extremely unique detector system currently under construction 4,100 meters above sea level on the slope of Pico de Orizaba, Mexico. The detector will be used to record both steady and transient gamma-ray sources and to provide an unbiased survey of the northern sky. Stefan will provide a full description of the project and the research work involved.

For information regarding the colloquium, feel free to email katev@uwm.edu.

Coffee/tea/cookies will be served starting at 3:45 PM (also in Physics lecture hall 137).
