Read about Bootsma in the Chicago Tribune.

Harvey Bootsma (foreground), a scientist in the School of Freshwater Sciences, and his research associate, Jim Weselowski, calibrate CO2 sensors mounted on a stationary buoy in Lake Michigan.

Bootsma plunges into the 55-degree water in mid-October to collect samples and check data-collection equipment located on the lake bottom.

Quagga mussels, covered in algae, populate the bottom of the lake below the buoy – about a half mile out from Shorewood’s Atwood Park.

After a 40-minute dive, Bootsma surfaces.
