About the UWM College of Nursing Community Nursing Centers

One of the first nursing schools in the nation to establish community nursing centers, the UWM College of Nursing enjoys longstanding partnerships with two Milwaukee community centers – House of Peace Community Center and Silver Spring Neighborhood Center. After 30 years of collaborating with communities, the College of Nursing has developed a unique nursing model of care linking public health and primary care. Our Community Nursing Centers had over 10,000 primary health care encounters last year.

The House of Peace Community Nursing Center is located at the House of Peace Community Center, a faith-based agency. This community nursing center emphasizes health promotion and disease prevention through health education and screening programs. A range of educational programs for community residents is provided on such topics as nutrition, exercise, and general health promotion activities. Particular emphasis has been placed on the provision of both prevention and support services for families dealing with cancer. Primary care also is provided, including such services as employment physical exams and women’s health exams.

The Silver Spring Community Nursing Center is located in the Silver Spring Neighborhood Center on Milwaukee’s northwest side in the state’s largest subsidized housing development. This center provides primary care services to residents including a walk-in clinic. In addition, nursing center staff provide care to residents and work closely with social workers, teachers, daycare workers and recreation staff in the neighborhood center to coordinate many other health education and disease prevention services, such as immunization and flu clinics.
