Students, Faculty and Alumni volunteer to help veterans

UWM nursing students, alumni and faculty members volunteered to help veterans with vision screenings in a Stand-Down program held in mid-September at the Armory on Richards Street. The screening was sponsored by Prevent Blindness Wisconsin in collaboration with the Vision Department at the Veterans Administration. Sandra Underwood, professor of nursing, helped recruit UWM volunteers for the project.

Others from UWM who participated included pre-nursing research student Rebecca Elizabeth Robinson, nursing students Ashanti Dean and Sylvia Chiaka Unanka and alumna Kelly Richards.

The screenings provided her a chance to use skills she’d learned in the classroom, said Dean. “This experience also taught me about the current needs in my community through observation and interaction rather than a Powerpoint.”
