Students Participate in Veterans Affairs Stand Down

On Feb. 19, UWM College of Nursing students and high school students who are part of the university’s Upward Bound program helped out at the Veterans Affairs Stand Down at the National Guard Armory.

The event, which was organized through the Wisconsin Veterans Stand Down Committee, served approximately 190 veterans.

Stand Downs are one part of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ efforts to provide services to homeless veterans. The events provide services such as food, shelter, clothing, and health screenings. The UWM group helped with vision and other health screenings.

The events are coordinated by local VAs, other government agencies and community agencies that serve the homeless.

UWM Upward Bound is a precollege academic achievement program designed to help students develop the motivation and skills that are required to graduate from  high school and successfully complete a college degree.
