The House of Peace is heavily utilized by people living in the 53205 zip code.It serves primarily African Americans of all ages and both genders. The median household income for the 53205 zip code was nearly three times lower than that of the state of Wisconsin, $16,738 as compared to $49,993. 57.9% of the 53205 zip code lives below the federal poverty level (U.S. Census Bureau, 2009).
Why:
Personal hygiene items are often expensive and difficult to obtain.Many area pantries and shelters provide food and clothing, but lack the resources to provide personal hygiene items. Also, the current Wisconsin food stamp regulations do not allow for the purchase of hygiene items.
Where:
The distribution process will take place at the House of Peace Community Center
in Milwaukee’s central city.
