College of Nursing in Review for 2008-09


Research

UWM NIH-funded Self Management Science Center (SMSC) faculty launched new biobehavioral research laboratory. 

College of Nursing (CON) led the campus in percentage of increase (136%) in extramural research awards over previous three year average and increases research expenditures by 94% over last three years.

Professor Jennifer Doering was awarded the prestigious Robert Woods Johnson Foundation Faculty Scholar Award.

CON led implementation of new campus-wide, interdisciplinary Advanced Health Informatics Institute.  

CON led campus development of $39M construction proposal for an interdisciplinary Integrative Biobehavioral Research Complex.

Additional multi-million dollar, five-year contract was signed with Aurora Health Care and Cerner Corporation to extend the ACW Knowledge Based Nursing Initiative, a real time EHR and clinical decision support system for nurses at the point of care.


Academic Programs

Increased use of technology in undergraduate curriculum through continued development of simulation techniques including birthing scenarios.

Launched the Nursing Endeavor Program as part of campus Access to Success initiative for 19 underrepresented freshman students from Milwaukee.

Admitted the first cohort of Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) students.


Practice Initiatives

Institute for Urban Health Partnerships (IUHP) faculty and staff awarded $1.2M grant from HRSA for PHASE (Promoting Health And Students Education) II to develop and test a community-focused nursing practice model in partnership with Milwaukee Health Services, a federally funded community health center.

Institute for Urban Health Partnerships team developed and tested a provider training program and toolkit for social service staff focused on adolescent pregnancy prevention with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funding.

UWM Community Nursing Centers continued to provide over 8,000 primary health care encounters this year to residents of two underserved Milwaukee neighborhoods.

IUHP director, Dr. Anne Banda, cycles 900 miles around Lake Michigan and raises over $2500 in donations from sponsors to support the nursing centers.
 

International & Global Health

Professor Amy Coenen and her UWM-based International Council of Nurses (ICN) staff formally launch Version 2 of the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP ®).  ICNP ® – a clinical taxonomy for nursing – is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a standardized classification system.

Faculty travel with students to Mexico and Malawi to conduct courses on comparative health systems.  

Dean Sally Lundeen presents UWM ICN Research and Development Centre progress at ICN Quadrennial Congress in Durban, South Africa.

Distinguished Professor Norma Lang presents results of the ACW Knowledge Based Nursing Initiative at the Royal College of Nursing and British Parliament in London, England.

Dr. Karen Morin elected President-Elect of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.


Workforce Leadership

State of Wisconsin Initiative to Fast Track (SWIFT) Nurse Educators website launched.  Funded by the US Department of Labor and Wisconsin and participating health systems, this $2.4M project created a model that supported 65 nurses to complete master’s degrees or health educator certificates and sign contracts as clinical nurse educators throughout Wisconsin.

Dean Sally Lundeen is elected to Wisconsin Center for Nursing Board of Directors.
