PROJECT ABSTRACT

This project
will aim to reduce the breast cancer morbidity and mortality in Southeastern Wisconsin through the institution of a culturally tailored breast cancer education and referral program for low-income, minority (i.e., African American, Hispanic, Hmong, Asian, American Indian) and immigrant/refugee women from Milwaukee, Kenosha and Racine County. The objectives of the project are to: (1) facilitate the adoption (and maintenance) of breast cancer screening behaviors among low-income, minority and, immigrant/refugee women; (2) engage 200 administrators, teachers, staff, family health advocates, community health nurses and lay health educators from the Social Development Commission, the Milwaukee’s Pan-American Community Association, the Hispanic Cancer Leadership Initiative, the African American Cancer Leadership Initiative and other collaborating community groups in efforts to increase breast cancer early detection and follow-up among low-income, minority and immigrant/refugee women; (3) present culturally-tailored breast cancer education and referral programs to approximately 2,000 low-income, minority and immigrant/refugee women in community-based social service settings; and, (4) expand the involvement of administrators, teachers, and staff of social service agencies dedicated to providing support to low-income, immigrant/refugee and minority families in efforts of the Milwaukee Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
