Health Professional Educational Certificate
This program is designed for health professionals, such as nurses, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists and others who want to be better prepared to teach clients, staff and students within their specialty. It provides students with additional preparation in educational principles and theory to support them in their teaching roles and courses focus on areas such as planning education programs for adults, teaching strategies and changing health behaviors.

This program is a collaboration among the College of Nursing, School of Education and the College of Health Sciences. It is open to those who have baccalaureate, master's or doctoral degrees and have been in clinical practice for a number of years and are now teaching in their specialty or want to be prepared to teach in their specialty.

The Health Professional Educational Certificate (HPEC) is available to students who are:
  • enrolled in a graduate degree program, OR
  • health professionals who hold a baccalaureate, master's or doctoral degree

Admission Information

Applicants are admitted to the certificate program in one of three categories:
  • Post-baccalaureate student. Student have completed a bachelor's degree in a health profession discipline with a grade point average of 2.75 or above (4.0 scale) and not be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program at UWM. 
  • Current student in a UWM graduate health profession program. 
  • Post-graduate student. Student must have completed a graduate degree in health profession or related discipline with a grade point average of 3.0 or above (4.0 scale)

Curriculum
This program requires the completion of five courses (15 credit hours).
Courses which are offered as part of the HPEC program are available in each semester and may be offered in person as afternoon or evening, on-line or hybrid courses. Students complete the following HPEC courses within three years:

Required core courses: 6 credits
Curriculum/Program Planning and Evaluation Courses: 3 credits
Teaching/Instruction Strategies: 3 credits
Elective courses: 3 credits
