PhD Curriculum
The foundation for the academic program in nursing is comprised of three areas. These areas are development of nursing knowledge, the application of that knowledge, and the context of health systems and social policy.

Under the supervision of a faculty advisor, each student plans a course of study that constitutes a unified program. Successful completion of 49 graduate credits will complete the doctoral degree.

The major components of the curriculum include:

Core Courses—9 credits
Nurs 801 Foundations of Nursing Inquiry (3 credits)
Nurs 802 The Science of Nursing (3 credits)
Nurs 803 Nursing Science and Public Policy (3 credits)

Specialty Credits—3 core credits, 12 elective credits
Nurs 820 Analysis of Nursing Phenomena (3 credits)
12 elective credits with 6 of those credits earned in disciplines other than nursing

Research Methods/Design Courses—22 credits
Nurs 779 Multivariate Statistics (3 credits)
Nurs 881 Measurement for Nursing Research (2 credits)
Nurs 882 Qualitative Approaches for Nursing Research (3 credits)
Nurs 883 Quantitative Approaches for Nursing Research (3 credits)
Nurs 890 Issues in Nursing Scholarship (3 credits)
Nurs 899 Research Practicum (1-6 credits)

Nurs 885 Advanced Quantitative Research (3 credits)
OR
Nurs 886 Advanced Qualititative Research (3 credits)

Dissertation
Nurs 997 Doctoral Dissertation (3 credits each semester as dissertator)
