Online Experience

Students in the Online PhD Program use the Desire-to-Learn (D2L) Course Management System. D2L allows the students to access a variety of information including PDF articles, Word documents, and PowerPoint presentations over the internet in a very organized fashion.

The D2L Discussion Forums provide the professors and students with a place to exchange ideas about the topics in the courses. D2L also shows students their Grades, provides a Dropbox for student assignments, and contains a link to their e-Reserve articles.

UWM-College of Nursing also provides the ability for students with webcams to communicate "face-to-face" with their professors and other students in their cohort. We use Adobe Connect Professional (Breeze Meeting) for one-on-one chats with the Professor and for small multiple person meetings over the internet.

Another technical tool we provide is PantherFile, a data storage/data sharing place on the internet (up to 250MB of storage per student) which is secure and provides the students with the ability to share digital content with anyone.

Here is what some of our students have said about their online learning experience:

  • "I just wanted to let you know that I am totally, utterly impressed with the UWM group of professionals. I have found myself in a variety of educational situations over the years, and never have I seen such high standards, yet such a willingness to facilitate my learning and the whole educational experience! I am stunned and happy with my choice of UWM for doctoral studies. Thank you very much for your part in this program." - Cynthia Steinwedel (2007 Cohort)
  • "I am able to raise 4 children, work a full-time job, and complete my Doctoral Degree, all at the same time and all from home! - Nancee Quinn (2005 Cohort)
  • "The faculty have kind hearts, integrity, experience, wisdom, and email inboxes as well as telephones, time for you and a genuine interest in your success." - ('We hope you Thrive' presentation by the 2003 Cohort)
