Harriet H. Werley Center for Nursing Research and Evaluation (WCNRE)

Services and Resources

WCNRE staff offer direct, informational/instructional, and consultation services in the areas of funding opportunities, research design and methods, proposal development and application preparation, grants management, data management and analysis, and publications/presentations. Services are targeted to College of Nursing Faculty and Research Staff. Selected services are available to students enrolled in College of Nursing graduate programs.

If WCNRE assistance is needed for research or other scholarly activities, the faculty/staff member should download and complete a "Request for WCNRE Services" form. That form is available on the LAN (WCNRE Kiosk) and on WCNRE's website. The form should be submitted-as an attachment-to cnre@uwm.edu. A specialized form for requesting literature searches is also available. Faculty and staff can access research related policies, forms and program
announcements on the LAN.

Grant applications assistance, including:

  • Literature searches and/or retrieval.
  • Searches of funding files, funding databases, and online archives.
  • Location of funding agency guidelines and contacts.
  • Planning for all aspects of application development.
  • Providing boilerplates for letters, resource description, timelines, etc.
  • Creating complex graphics and tables.
  • Creating and maintaining "extended" versions of biosketches.
  • Developing project budgets and outlines for budget justification.
  • Facilitating internal and external proposal review, including on-going critique and editing.
  • Facilitating budget review and approval within the school and at the campus level.
  • Preparing/completing all agency and CON/UWM forms.
  • Formatting, compiling & transmitting final application.
Consultation in the areas of:
  • Study design.
  • Power analysis & other sampling issues.
  • Instrument selection/development, including the creation of scannable data-collection forms, using Teleforms�.
  • Data collection techniques.
  • Methods of data entry and management.
  • Statistical techniques & methods of data analysis.
  • Interpretation and presentation of findings, including graphic display of findings.
  • Research-related software: database, qualitative, and quantitative packages.
  • IRB procedures, including materials related to Exempt Protocol Review in the CON/Human Subjects Research issues.
Instruction & Information
  • Provide guest lectures in graduate & undergraduate courses & at other CON functions.
  • Disseminate information related to funding, & research-related resources, including:
    • Program announcements, calls and requests for applications/proposals.
    • Calls for conference or publication participation.
    • Web-based research methods information.
    • Publication-related resources.
    • Changes in policy related to the participation of human subjects in research.
  • Sponsor research development activities/events, such as Brown Bag seminars, Research Salons, workshops.
  • Support use of online research-related resources, such as literature database search techniques.
Research-Related Services
  • On-site data entry, management & analysis.
  • Pre-award support, including Other Support, agency budget negotiation, etc.
  • Post-award grants management: funds management, report generation, human resources issues.
  • Support scholarly collaboration and collegiality among CON faculty and students, and with investigators from other UWM Schools/Colleges or from other institutions and agencies.
Graduate students

Faculty requested assistance to students. Within the boundaries of faculty specifications about the types and intensity of assistance, WCNRE staff:

  • Provide assistance with grant applications including:
    • Methods of location of funding agency guidelines and contacts.
    • Providing boilerplates for letters, resource description, timelines, etc.
    • Providing electronic form copies when possible.
  • Provide consultation about research methods and data management & analysis
Services provided directly to students:
  • Sponsor research development events, such as Brown Bag seminars, Research Salons, workshops.
  • Disseminate information related to funding, & research-related resources, including:
    • Program announcements, calls and requests for applications.
    • Calls for conference or publication participation.
    • Web-based research methods information.
    • Changes in policy related to the participation of human subjects in research.
Community and professional agencies (fee-based):
  • Assist in matching faculty expertise to client consultation needs.
  • Assist in designing nursing research or evaluation projects.
  • Assist in development of sampling procedures & in determination of sample size (power analysis).
  • Create and mail data collection forms
  • Assist with of analysis of research/evaluation data, including data entry, data management & analysis & interpretation & illustration of results.
