Pre-Nursing Course Work

You will first be admitted as a pre-nursing student. That means you will take liberal arts courses in humanities, social sciences and natural sciences along with some nursing courses. This takes an average of 2 years to complete.

As you are completing these courses, you can apply to the 2 years of the Nursing Major. To prepare for admission you need to complete course requirements* with a "C" or better, have a least a 2.50 GPA in the required science courses and meet the 2.75 minimum GPA overall.  
 
Faculty also evaluate students on your written essay, work and volunteer experiences. Admission to the major is competitive.
 
Course requirements* for pre-nursing students:
  • Two semesters of Anatomy & Physiology I & II Biology 105 & 106 (8 credits) 
  • Two semesters of Chemistry Chemistry 115 & 215 (8 credits)
  • Microbiology Biology 202 (4 credits)
  • Clinical Nutrition Bio 190 (2 credits)
  • Physics 101 OR 102 (4 credits)
  • English Composition II English 201 (3 credits)
  • Sociology (3 credits)
  • Introduction to Psychology Psychology 101 (3 credits)
  • Human Growth and Development/Lifespan Psychology 210 (3 credits)
  • Social Science Elective (3 credits)
  • Cultural Diversity in Healthcare Nursing 101 (3 credits)
  • Perspectives in Healthcare Nursing 102 (2credits)
  • Nursing Research Nursing 300 (2 credits)
  • Total of 48 prerequisite credits

General Education Requirements (GER)

You will need to complete UWM GER credits for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and competencies. See GER list

Competencies in Math and English are based on ACT or SAT sub-scores.

  • College Algebra/Math 111 at UW-Parkside meets competency requirements -OR-
  • Transfer credits in Math and English are evaluated by the nursing advisor for competency requirements
