Wisconsin Archeological Society Research Award

The Wisconsin Archeological Society is pleased to announce the establishment of the Wisconsin Archeological Society Research Award (WASRA). The award was created to provide limited funding to students and avocational archaeologists conducting research in Wisconsin and surrounding areas. Typically, the award will be made available on an annual basis for no more than $500.00 funds permitting. The award amount may be given to one individual or divided among several persons deemed eligible by the WASRA Committee.

Funds may be used by applicants to cover costs associated with archaeological research in the geographic area adjacent to and including the state of Wisconsin. Award funds may be used to pay for special analysis, such as radiocarbon dates, floral/faunal analysis, soils analysis, etc. or for travel. No portion of the award may be used to cover any administration expenses of the award, payment of salary, or reimbursement of completed work.

Applicant Eligibility -

Applicants interested in applying for the WASRA funds must meet the following criteria:

  1. Applicant must be a member in good standing in the Wisconsin Archeological Society
  2. Applicant must be a student or other nonprofessional
  3. Applicant must submit a confidential letter of endorsement/sponsorship from a professional member in the archaeological community
  4. Research project must be located in the state of Wisconsin or adjacent geographic areas
  5. Applicant will be required to present a paper of his/her research during on the Wisconsin

NOTE: Archeological Societys monthly meetings AND submit paper for potential publication in either The Wisconsin Archeologist or the WisArch Newsletter.

Application Procedure -

Applicants must submit a cover page including name, organization, street address, city, state, ZIP code, daytime phone number, evening phone number, and email. Applicants should also include the last four digits of their Social SecurityNumber. These four digits will be used as the applicants processing number and should be located at the top of every page of their application packet. Applications should also include a description of the project; what research questions or problems that applicant intends to address; and how the research goals/results will contribute to Wisconsin/regional archaeology. The project description should be limited to 2 typed pages (12 pt Times Roman font, single spaced, 1 inch margins).

NOTE: An additional page should be submitted that provides a general budget as to how the funds will be spent. Pages should be numbered sequentially in the top right hand corner and include the applicants four digit processing number.

Application Packets -

Applicants must submit one sealed letter of endorsement or sponsorship and seven complete application packets. Each packet should include one copy of each of the following:

  • Cover page
  • Project description
  • Budget
  • Wisconsin Archeological Society membership dues
  • Resume or Vitae

NOTE: Failure to follow the application procedure and requirements will result in rejection of the submitted application.

Review Process -

Accepted applications will be distributed to the WASRA review committee for comment and ranking. Results from the review committee will be reported to the Wisconsin Archeological Societys Board of Directors during the May meeting. Application Deadline Applications submitted for consideration for the current year must be received by June 21. Applications received after June 21 will not be considered for this year (Please consider submitting your application for next year).
