Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 as amended requires that you be advised of your rights concerning your education records and of certain categories of public information which the University has designated "directory information." This information will help you learn more about what your rights are, provide your parents with a resource to help them understand FERPA and assist you in understanding what UWM faculty and staff are required to do to protect your privacy.

Financial Appeals
The most common fee/tuition appeals involve a drop or withdrawal action. The following is intended as a general guideline for students if considering an appeal of tuition. However, it is important for the student to know that appeals are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and many factors are taken into consideration.

Possibly Eligible:
Please note that approval is not automatic.
  1. University error (with memo from faculty or staff member who has immediate knowledge of the situation).
  2. Conditions beyond student’s control with documentation verifying condition(s).
  3. Employer changed or significantly increased hours unexpectedly and the change was mandatory. Requires supporting documentation from the employer.
Possibly Not Eligible:

  1. I don’t have the money/ financial hardship.
  2. Did not know/ no one told me.
  3. Thought if did not attend, would automatically be dropped.
  4. Changed jobs, took new position paying higher wages (student made decision to accept “needed the money”).
  5. Someone told me…or…someone didn’t tell me (i.e. my adviser told me I could drop/withdraw but didn’t tell me I would have to pay).
If you believe you may have a valid appeal based on the above parameters, you should contact the Office of Student Life/Dean of Students at 414-229-4632 or we are located in Mellencamp Hall 118. A Program Assistant or Student Worker will do the initial intake and discuss the documentation the student must provide. In most cases the student will be scheduled for an appointment with an Assistant Dean.

Medical Tuition Credit
UWM is the only school in the UW System to offer this credit. On a one-time basis, the student may request a partial (drop) or a full semester (withdrawal) benefit. The credit may be applied to a future semester only at UWM to be used only by the student who withdrew.

Possibly Eligible:
Please note that approval is not automatic.

  1. Student illness, with physician or health care provider statement recommending reduction of credit load or withdrawal due to unanticipated medical condition.
  2. Student as primary caregiver, with physician statement indicating relationship as parent or spouse and need for student to reduce credit load or withdraw for purposes of providing unanticipated essential care.
  3. Death in immediate family (must provide copy of death certificate for immediate family member).

 Possibly Not eligible:

  1. Death of extended family member.*
  2. Assist in care of very ill family member. *
  3. Stress due to a variety of personal or family crises as above, abuse, relationship etc. *
  4. Medical situations one could be reasonably have anticipated and have taken more timely action.
*Unless meet criteria for #1 of #2 above. In infrequent cases there are extenuating circumstances that can be documented by an attorney or other professional that substantiate the need for the student to reduce credits or withdraw due to illness or death of immediate family member.

If you believe your sitatuion fits the eligibility described above, you should contact the Office of Student Life/Dean of Students Office at 414-229-4632, or we are located in Mellencamp Hall 118. A Program Assistant or Student Worker will do a student intake and provide the information regarding forms and documentation that must be submitted for review. Many cases are reviewed without a student appointment.

Note: Students who received financial aid should consult with the Department of Financial Aid prior to withdrawing to determine impact on financial aid repayment.
