Determination Of Optimal Pt Loading Rate For Microbial Desalination Cells

The objectives of this project is to experimentally determine the optimal loading rate of platinum on the cathode of microbial desalination cells and understand the effects of Pt loading rates on MDC performance under different catholytes.

Tasks and responsibilities:

The student will independently carry out the experiment under the guide of Dr. Zhen He. The student will establish 4-5 small scale MDCs with identical configurations and different cathode Pt loading rates. He will operate bio-electrochemical reactors and collect data of current generation and salt removal. He will also have weekly meeting with Dr. Zhen He and is actively involved in preparation of journal publication. He will present the research results on CEAS annual poster competition.
